Rudolf Uhlenhaut
The alluring shape of the Uhlenhaut Coupe is the starting point of the 300 SL; so-called Gullwing because of the winged appearance of the doors hinged on its roof. As America approaches the peak of the space age, this out-of-this world design encapsulates the futurism of the time.
Maximilian Hoffman
Maximilian Hoffman’s suggestion to produce a road-going version of the Uhlenhaut Coupe was the catalyst for the production of Gullwing and Roadster. He is credited for single handedly introducing European cars to the booming American automobile market.
All around there is hope for a peaceful new age. For a fairer and more beautiful society.

Karl Wilfert & Walter Häcker
Kar Wilfert and Walter Häcker join forces to design ‘the Gullwing’s little brother’ in the form of the 190 SL. They pioneer the body’s perfect proportions at an affordable price than the 300 SL to help a wider American audience realise their dream of owning the most coveted car.

Paul Bracq
Around this time, Paul Bracq designs the 280 SL Pagoda with a linear and delicate silhouette. The iconic roof that gives the car its moniker offers plenty of space and visibility from the inside, while all importantly casting a cool and confident light from the view of passers by.
Béla Barényi
As the father of passive safety in automotive design, Béla Barényi had practical reasons to design the Pagoda’s unmistakable roof – as fortification in case of being overturned. The Pagoda stands as a true example that style and substance go hand in hand.
